Publix is my favorite grocery chain. I shop there at least once a week and its where I get the majority of my food and savings. Publix doubles all manufacturer coupons $0.50 and below in GA.
They have several items BOGO each week (buy one get one free). When things are BOGO, they are really 50% off. In GA, you do not really need to buy two of them to get the savings. However, if you read other blogs, you might notice that in FL you do have to buy two as the first will ring full price and second one free. It varies by state, so just keep that in mind.
In addition, Sundays and Mondays they have one suprise item for a penny, with the coupon from their insert in the Sunday paper. Usually its something that 'everyone' can use such as paper towels, salad dressing, soda, mac and cheese, hot dogs, cheese, toilet paper, bleach, bottled water, etc. You need to have the coupon at most Publix locations to get this item for a penny and you must spend $10 before coupons are taken off, but its a great thing to get something back for just being a loyal shopper!
Publix will accept Publix store coupons, MF (manufacturer) coupons, and competitor coupons. Each store is allowed to determine who is a competitor, so you have to know the rules at each location. They do not accept expired coupons. You can do what is called stacking- use a store OR competitor coupon AND a manufacturer coupon for one item to make maximum savings. (You can NOT use two manufacturer coupons on one item ever, at any store. Just an FYI) At all Publix locations, the cash register will beep if you either have more coupons than number of items or if your dollar value of coupons goes over $100. Neither are a cause for concern, it just takes a manager to come over and enter their magic code for the register to keep going. This happens to me almost every trip, and I never get hassled about it. Should you want to avoid this, all you have to do is add low value items (such as fruit or kool aid packets) to bump up the number of items to match the number of coupons and make sure your coupon totals are under $100. But again, I never do this.
Stores that I know-
Huntcrest- This is my favorite location, located in Lawrenceville on Old Peachtree and Brown Road. The stores general manager is John Greene, and the district manager is also named John. Stop in and introduce yourself! They LOVE couponers and treat them much better than some of the other local stores. Their staff is well trained, polite, and has many of the same friendly faces that I have seen around for a long time. In addition, this particular Publix store will take almost any coupon as a competitor. I do know they take Kroger, Food Lion, Target, CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreens coupons. The rule on a competitor coupon is that they will only take one of each coupon per competitor per item. So if you want to buy 5 of the same item with the same coupon from say Target, you will need to get them in 5 different transactions. I do believe this to be fair, since they do not get any reimbursement for these. Overage is allowed on MF coupons. If the item is $1.50 and the coupon is $2.00 off, the remaining $0.50 will be applied towards other groceries. You will NOT get cash back, I do not know any stores that will do this around here. Its more prevalent in other states.
Merton Walk- The one closest to me, located at the corner of 120 and Lawrenceville-Suwanee. The store manager is Mike Olive, though he is never there when I am. I think he must be made up, LOL. They are not as friendly to couponers, as their cashiers are often misinformed and need to call a supervisor over for help. They are not rude, but my transactions never go as smoothly there. If you must shop here, the customer service supervisor/manager named Janine is quite helpful. This location only takes Kroger as a competitor. They do NOT take Target or any drug store coupons. They WILL start taking Food Lion coupons as soon as the location down the street from them opens up. Overage on coupons is allowed, but again, you may need to ask for a manager as many cashiers want to 'adjust' your coupons. Do not let them do it! Since they will be getting reimbursed the full amount, you want that to go towards your other purchases.
Old Peachtree- This one is located at Old Peachtree and Buford Hwy. I do not know the store manager, as I have only shopped there once or twice a long time ago. They do take Kroger and Walgreens as competitors. Not sure on their other policies.
Let me know if you know the rules or staff from any other location! It is always, always a good idea to get to know the people in charge where you plan to shop. These are the ones who want you to be happy and loyal, know the rules, and can help when you have a problem. I say this because often a cashier might say something like "We do not take these coupons," when in fact they do. If you know who to ask for, it makes for less trouble and time wasted. And once the cashiers and managers get to know you as an honest couponer, they will take less time scrutinizing you and will be more helpful and friendly. More on this later :)
